How to not hit the quick

The quick is the blood vessel inside the nail. On pale nails you can see it as a pink core — stop a couple of millimetres short of it.
On black nails you can't see it, so work from the other end. Take a sliver at a time and look at the cut face after each one. It starts chalky and white; when a small dark circle appears in the centre, you're close to the quick. Stop there.
Cut top to bottom rather than side to side, and hold the paw loosely — gripping tight makes them pull.
If you do catch it, it will bleed and they'll yelp, but it isn't dangerous. Press a clean cloth on it, or dab styptic powder or cornflour, and hold for a couple of minutes. Then stop for the day.
Little and often beats a monthly battle. The quick recedes as the nail shortens, so frequent small trims make the next one easier.

Why not the $12 pair

Blunt clippers don't cut the nail. They crush it.

Which is usually why a dog that used to sit still now pulls its paw away.

A cheap pair

Blunt from the packet, and the blades don't quite meet. The nail gets compressed before it's cut.

Nailed It

Sharpened stainless that closes clean. One cut, all the way through.

A cheap pair

A crushed nail splits, and the pressure carries into the quick. They feel that.

Nailed It

A clean cut they don't feel is the whole difference between this and $12.

A cheap pair

Nothing stops the blade. How far you go is a guess you make in half a second.

Nailed It

A guard limits how far the blade travels, so a flinch doesn't turn into a mistake.

Where a cheap pair wins: if you trim a placid dog once a year, $12 is plenty. This is for the ones who already hate it.
